A classroom observation checklist should help an observer notice what matters without turning the lesson into a compliance exercise. The purpose is to collect useful evidence about teaching and learning, identify patterns and support a focused professional conversation afterward.
This checklist is designed for principals, heads of school, academic coordinators, department leaders, instructional coaches and peer teachers. It can be used for formal observations, learning walks, coaching visits and developmental peer observation.
Before the observation
- Clarify the purpose of the observation.
- Identify whether it is formal, developmental, coaching-based or part of a learning walk.
- Confirm the observation focus or criteria.
- Know whether the teacher has identified a particular area for feedback.
- Review relevant context such as grade, subject, lesson sequence or recent development goals.
- Decide how evidence will be recorded.
- Confirm when and how feedback will be given.
During the observation: learning purpose
- Can students explain what they are learning?
- Is the purpose of the lesson meaningful and appropriate?
- Are success criteria or expectations clear where relevant?
- Does the activity connect logically with prior or future learning?
Explanation and modelling
- Are explanations accurate and logically sequenced?
- Are examples, models or demonstrations used effectively?
- Does the teacher check whether students understood the explanation?
- Are misconceptions anticipated or addressed?
Questioning and student thinking
- Do questions reveal what students understand?
- Are different students involved rather than only volunteers?
- Is sufficient wait time provided?
- Are follow-up questions used to deepen thinking?
- Does the teacher respond to answers rather than simply move to the next question?
Student engagement
- Are students intellectually engaged rather than merely quiet or busy?
- Do students have meaningful opportunities to think, discuss, practise or create?
- Is participation broadly distributed?
- Are students able to work with appropriate independence?
Assessment for learning
- Does the teacher check understanding during the lesson?
- Is evidence gathered from more than one or two students?
- Are misconceptions or gaps identified?
- Does the teacher adapt teaching when evidence shows a problem?
- Do students receive feedback that helps them improve?
Differentiation and support
- Are support and challenge responsive to learner need?
- Are struggling students helped without lowering the learning goal unnecessarily?
- Are students who are ready for greater challenge extended meaningfully?
- Are additional needs considered in task design, language, pacing or access?
Classroom routines and learning climate
- Do transitions protect learning time?
- Are expectations clear and consistently applied?
- Is the classroom emotionally safe and respectful?
- Can students ask questions, make mistakes and contribute without humiliation?
- Does the teacher maintain authority without unnecessary confrontation?
Evidence of student learning
- What are students saying, writing, making or demonstrating?
- Is there evidence of progress during the lesson?
- Do student responses show understanding rather than superficial completion?
- Can students explain their thinking?
- Is the quality of student work consistent with the intended learning?
Observer evidence notes
Record evidence before interpretation. Useful evidence includes:
- exact student responses;
- examples of teacher questions;
- participation patterns;
- time spent on transitions;
- examples of misconceptions;
- samples or descriptions of student work;
- teacher adjustments made in response to evidence.
Avoid vague notes such as “good lesson” or “weak engagement.” Write what was actually observed.
After the observation
- Ask the teacher to reflect first.
- Identify one or two strengths worth retaining.
- Identify the highest-leverage development priority.
- Support feedback with specific evidence.
- Agree one manageable next step.
- Identify any support needed: coaching, modelling, planning, resources or peer observation.
- Set a follow-up point where appropriate.
- Document only what is necessary and useful.

Should every item be scored?
No. A checklist can guide attention without requiring numerical ratings. Evidence and the quality of the feedback conversation are more important than producing a total score.
Can the same checklist be used for every subject?
The core dimensions can apply across subjects, but observers should interpret them in context. A laboratory lesson, seminar, early-years activity and mathematics lesson should not be expected to look identical.
How many development points should feedback include?
Usually one or two high-leverage priorities are more useful than a long list. Teachers need a manageable next step they can actually implement and revisit.
