Experiential Learning Lesson Plan: How to Design Learning Through Experience

Experiential learning is often misunderstood as simply “learning by doing.” Doing matters, but experience alone does not guarantee learning. Students need opportunities to act, observe, reflect, make meaning and apply what they have learned in a new situation.

That is why experiential learning should be planned deliberately. A good experiential learning lesson plan does not add an activity to a conventional lesson; it designs the learning around meaningful experience.

What is experiential learning?

Experiential learning is learning through direct or simulated experience followed by reflection and meaning-making. One of the best-known frameworks is David Kolb’s experiential learning cycle:

  1. Concrete Experience — the learner encounters or does something.
  2. Reflective Observation — the learner thinks about what happened.
  3. Abstract Conceptualisation — the learner develops or connects ideas, concepts and explanations.
  4. Active Experimentation — the learner applies those ideas in another situation.

The value of the cycle is that it prevents teachers from treating activity itself as the learning outcome.

Why experiential learning needs careful lesson planning

A practical activity can be enjoyable but educationally weak if students do not know what to observe, what to think about, or how the experience connects with the intended learning.

An experiential lesson plan should therefore identify:

  • the learning objective and outcome;
  • the experience students will have;
  • the prior knowledge needed;
  • the guiding questions;
  • the evidence students will collect;
  • the reflection process;
  • the concept or principle to be developed;
  • the real-life application;
  • differentiation and support;
  • and the next situation in which students will transfer the learning.

Stage 1: Design the experience

The experience should be purposeful. It may be a practical investigation, field observation, role play, simulation, interview, design challenge, community task, case study, real-world problem, experiment, survey or hands-on construction.

Before selecting the activity, ask:

What experience would allow students to encounter the concept rather than only hear about it?

For example, students learning about friction might test different surfaces rather than begin with a definition. Students learning persuasive communication might analyse and create messages for authentic audiences rather than only copy a format.

Stage 2: Plan observation and evidence

Students should know what they are noticing, recording, measuring, comparing or discussing during the experience.

The teacher may plan:

  • observation prompts;
  • data tables;
  • photographs or sketches;
  • questions for pair discussion;
  • evidence collection;
  • or short notes on unexpected outcomes.

This keeps the experience intellectually focused.

Stage 3: Build reflection into the lesson

Reflection is the bridge between experience and understanding.

Useful reflection questions include:

  • What happened?
  • What surprised you?
  • What pattern did you notice?
  • What was difficult?
  • Why do you think this happened?
  • How did your thinking change?
  • What would you do differently next time?

Without reflection, experience can remain memorable but conceptually shallow.

Stage 4: Connect experience to concept

The teacher now helps students move from observation to explanation.

This may involve direct teaching, modelling, vocabulary, diagrams, discussion, comparison with established principles or connecting student findings with curriculum content.

Experiential learning does not eliminate teacher explanation. It changes when and why explanation is used.

Stage 5: Plan real-life application

The strongest experiential lesson asks students to use what they learned in another context.

This can include:

  • solving a real-world problem;
  • designing an improved product;
  • testing the principle under new conditions;
  • making a recommendation;
  • applying learning at home or in the community;
  • or explaining a familiar phenomenon using the new concept.

This is where learning becomes transferable rather than remaining tied to one activity.

Experiential learning lesson plan example: heat transfer

Learning outcome: Students will distinguish conduction, convection and radiation and apply them to explain everyday heat-transfer situations.

Concrete experience: Students compare how metal and wooden spoons respond in warm water, observe convection in coloured water, and feel radiant heat from a safe distance.

Observation: Students record what changed and how quickly.

Reflection: Groups discuss why each situation behaved differently.

Conceptualisation: Teacher introduces conduction, convection and radiation using the students’ observations.

Application: Students explain why insulated bottles, shiny roofs and sea breezes behave as they do.

Assessment: Students classify a new real-life scenario and justify the mechanism involved.

Experiential learning lesson plan example: mathematics

Topic: Percentage and discount.

Experience: Students examine mock shop offers and compare discounts.

Reflection: They identify which offers are difficult to compare and why.

Conceptualisation: Teacher formalises percentage calculation strategies.

Application: Students decide which of several real-life offers provides the best value and justify the decision.

This moves percentage from an abstract exercise to a practical decision-making skill.

Topic: Local governance.

Experience: Students conduct a structured observation or interview related to a local civic issue.

Reflection: They compare stakeholder perspectives.

Conceptualisation: Teacher connects findings to governance structures, representation and public responsibility.

Application: Students write a reasoned recommendation for addressing the issue.

How to differentiate experiential learning

Different learners may need different entry points into the same experience. Some may need visual instructions, vocabulary support, guided questions, assigned roles or simplified data collection. Others may need additional variables, deeper analysis or an open-ended design challenge.

Assessment in experiential learning

Assessment should be embedded throughout the experience. Evidence may come from observation, discussion, practical performance, data interpretation, explanation, reflection, design, presentation or transfer to a new context.

The teacher should not assess only whether students completed the activity. The question is whether they developed the intended understanding and skill.

Common mistakes in experiential learning lesson plans

  • Choosing an exciting activity without a clear learning outcome.
  • Assuming that participation automatically means learning.
  • Skipping reflection because of time pressure.
  • Giving the full explanation before students have any experience to interpret.
  • Using only one real-world example and never asking for transfer.
  • Ignoring practical skills, collaboration and communication as evidence of learning.
  • Failing to prepare resources and transitions in advance.
