What is the 5E lesson plan model?

The 5E model organises learning into a sequence that activates prior knowledge, gives students experience with an idea, supports meaning-making, extends application and gathers evidence of learning. The model is widely associated with the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) instructional cycle and is used internationally in inquiry-oriented teaching.

1. Engage: bring the learner into the topic

Engage should do more than entertain. It should connect with prior knowledge, reveal a misconception, create curiosity or present a meaningful problem.

Possible strategies include a surprising demonstration, photograph, short scenario, prediction, question, object, story or real-life problem.

For example, before teaching heat transfer, the teacher may place a metal and wooden spoon in warm water and ask which handle will feel warmer first and why.

2. Explore: let students encounter the idea

In Explore, students investigate before receiving the full formal explanation. They may observe, sort, compare, experiment, manipulate, discuss, collect data or solve a problem.

The teacher should plan materials, grouping, safety, guiding questions, likely misconceptions and the evidence students will produce.

This phase is not “free activity”. It requires careful instructional design.

3. Explain: help students make meaning

Explanation should build from what students experienced. Students should first describe patterns, observations or reasoning. The teacher then introduces precise vocabulary, models, concepts or principles needed to deepen understanding.

A common mistake is to move directly to teacher explanation and reduce Explore to a decorative activity afterward. The power of the 5E model lies in allowing experience and thinking to inform explanation.

4. Elaborate: apply learning beyond the first example

Elaborate is where students transfer learning into a new context. They might solve a different problem, explain a real-life phenomenon, design something, compare cases, conduct a second investigation or apply the concept across subjects.

This phase is especially important because it helps distinguish memorised understanding from usable understanding.

5. Evaluate: assessment should flow through the model

Evaluation should not be treated only as the final five minutes. Teachers can gather evidence throughout all five phases through questioning, observation, student explanations, practical performance, written responses, peer dialogue and products.

The final phase can consolidate that evidence and ask students to reflect on what changed in their thinking.

A complete 5E lesson plan example: evaporation

Engage: Show two wet cloths, one placed under a fan and one away from moving air. Ask students to predict which will dry first.

Explore: Groups investigate evaporation under different conditions such as air movement, exposed surface area or warmth.

Explain: Students share patterns. The teacher develops the concept of evaporation and factors affecting its rate.

Elaborate: Students explain why clothes dry faster on certain days and why sweating cools the body.

Evaluate: Students respond to a new scenario and justify which condition would increase evaporation most.

How to differentiate a 5E lesson

Differentiation can occur in every phase. Some students may receive vocabulary support, visual scaffolds, structured data tables or guiding questions. Others may investigate additional variables, justify a conclusion or design a follow-up inquiry.

  • Forcing all five phases into one short period when a sequence of lessons would work better.

Does every 5E lesson fit into one period?

No. The model can structure one lesson or several connected lessons. Complex inquiry may require Explore and Explain across multiple periods. The important principle is coherence, not speed.
