Are students busy, or are they actually thinking?

Rate what you observed in one lesson. Focus on visible evidence rather than general impressions.

1. Attention to the learning

Most students know what they are working on and remain focused on the intended task.

2. Participation

Participation extends beyond the same small group of confident students.

3. Student thinking

Students are explaining, comparing, questioning, reasoning or making decisions rather than only copying or recalling.

4. Productive struggle

Students have enough challenge to think, while support prevents unnecessary frustration.

5. Response to questions

Students have time to think and their responses reveal more than one-word answers.

6. Collaboration

When students work together, the talk is connected to the learning rather than just task completion.

7. Independence

Students can continue meaningful work without waiting constantly for teacher approval.

8. Evidence of learning

Student work, talk or responses show that engagement is producing learning rather than activity alone.
