Learning Outcomes: How to Write Them — Examples for Teachers

Teachers often use the terms learning objective and learning outcome as if they mean exactly the same thing. That confusion weakens lesson planning because the teacher may write an intention but never define what evidence will show that learning actually occurred.

I find it more useful to keep the distinction simple:

  • Learning objective: what the teacher intends students to learn or focus on.
  • Learning outcome: what students should be able to demonstrate as evidence that the learning has happened.

Objectives describe the intended direction of learning; outcomes describe the evidence that learning has occurred.

This distinction is particularly important in competency-based teaching, where the emphasis moves from coverage of content to demonstrated knowledge, skills and application.

What is a learning outcome?

A learning outcome is a clear statement of what a learner should be able to know, understand, do, apply or demonstrate after a learning experience.

CBSE describes competency-based education as an approach centred on students demonstrating learning outcomes and attaining proficiency in competencies. Its guidance also emphasises real-world application, differentiated support and evidence of mastery. The CBSE Competency-Based Education portal therefore provides a strong policy context for outcome-based planning.

NCERT has also published Learning Outcomes at the Secondary Stage and other stage-specific learning-outcome resources that give teachers defined expectations across subjects.

Learning objectives and learning outcomes: what is the difference?

Learning objective Learning outcome
States the intended learning direction. States what students will demonstrate after learning.
Helps the teacher design the lesson. Helps the teacher judge whether learning occurred.
May describe the focus or purpose. Must be linked to observable or assessable evidence.
Example: Students will explore factors affecting evaporation. Example: Students will explain how temperature affects evaporation and support the explanation with evidence from an investigation.

The two should work together. An objective without a corresponding outcome can remain an intention. An outcome without a clear objective can become an isolated assessment statement.

The biggest mistake: vague outcomes

One of the most common problems is writing outcomes with verbs such as know, understand, learn, appreciate or be aware of without specifying what students will actually do.

For example:

Too vague: Students will understand photosynthesis.

Stronger: Students will explain the process of photosynthesis and identify the roles of sunlight, carbon dioxide and water.

If the teacher cannot observe or assess the outcome, the outcome is probably not written clearly enough.

How to write a strong learning outcome

A practical structure is:

Students will be able to + observable action + specific knowledge or skill + context/condition + evidence or criterion where useful.

For example:

Students will be able to compare two sources, identify one difference in perspective and support the comparison with evidence.

This structure helps the teacher connect planning, activity and assessment.

Write outcomes at different cognitive levels

Learning outcomes should not all sit at the same cognitive level. Depending on prior knowledge, the lesson and the intended challenge, students may be expected to recall, explain, apply, analyse, evaluate or create.

Cognitive level Possible verbs Example outcome
Recall identify, list, define, name Students will identify four parts of a flowering plant.
Explain describe, explain, summarise, classify Students will explain the function of each major plant part.
Apply use, calculate, demonstrate, solve Students will calculate percentage discount in three everyday shopping situations.

If the objectives are differentiated but the outcomes are identical for everyone, the differentiation has not been carried through to the end of the learning process.

Learning outcomes should include skills, not only content

Skills should be associated with every meaningful act of learning. Otherwise, learning can become the accumulation of information without the capacity to use it.

Depending on the lesson, outcomes can include:

  • communication;
  • collaboration;
  • inquiry;
  • problem-solving;
  • practical or manipulative skills;
  • reflection;
  • self-management;
  • decision-making;
  • application of knowledge.

Skills should be associated with every act of learning; otherwise learning risks becoming knowledge without use.

Connect learning outcomes to real-life application

Wherever possible, outcomes should show how students can use learning beyond the immediate worksheet or notebook task.

For example:

Basic outcome: Students will calculate percentages.

Applied outcome: Students will calculate and interpret percentages in contexts such as discounts, examination scores, interest or survey data.

The strongest learning outcomes show not only what students know, but what they can do with what they know.

CBSE’s competency-based guidance explicitly places importance on authentic problems and real-life contexts when students apply knowledge and skills.

Do teachers need to invent every learning outcome?

No. In CBSE schools, teachers already have access to learning-outcome frameworks and competency resources aligned with NCERT expectations. CBSE’s Learning Framework provides learning ladders, assessment objectives and subject-specific guidance, while its teacher resources include materials specifically designed to help teachers achieve learning outcomes in day-to-day teaching.

The professional task is therefore not simply to copy an official statement into the lesson plan. The teacher should interpret the prescribed outcome for the lesson, students and context, then decide what classroom evidence will demonstrate achievement.

A prescribed learning outcome is a starting point for planning, not a substitute for thinking about what evidence students will actually produce.

Link every learning outcome to evidence

An outcome becomes useful when the teacher knows how it will be evidenced.

Evidence may come through:

  • student explanations;
  • oral responses;
  • written work;
  • discussion;
  • practical performance;
  • models or products;
  • problem-solving;
  • peer interaction;
  • observation;
  • demonstrations;
  • self-assessment and reflection.

CBSE’s lesson-planning guidance links specific learning outcomes with pedagogical strategies, activities, assessment items, feedback and remedial teaching. The principle is important: assessment should reveal whether the outcome has been achieved rather than being an unrelated activity added at the end.

Add success criteria where useful

Learning outcomes tell students what they should demonstrate. Success criteria clarify what successful demonstration looks like.

Learning outcome: Students will explain evaporation.

Possible success criteria:

  • The explanation describes the change from liquid to vapour.
  • It identifies heat as a factor affecting evaporation.
  • It includes at least one real-life example.

Learning outcomes tell us what students should demonstrate; success criteria clarify what successful demonstration looks like.

Success criteria do not need to make every lesson bureaucratic. Use them where they make the expected quality clearer to students and improve feedback.

Use student-friendly language

The simpler the wording, the better. A learning outcome should help students understand the purpose of their learning, not impress adults with technical language.

Instead of:

Learners will demonstrate conceptual understanding of the relationship between evaporation and thermal energy.

write:

Students will explain how heat affects evaporation.

A learning outcome should be simple enough for the learner to understand what success looks like.

Keep outcomes specific and capable of producing evidence

More outcomes do not automatically produce a better lesson. A long list can become impossible to teach and assess within one period.

Write outcomes that are:

  • specific;
  • realistic for the available time;
  • appropriate to the students;
  • connected to the objective;
  • observable or assessable;
  • capable of producing evidence.

A good learning outcome is specific enough to be evidenced.

Examples of learning outcomes for teachers

English

  • Students will identify the main claim in a persuasive text and support it with two pieces of evidence.
  • Students will deliver a two-minute explanation using relevant vocabulary and clear sequencing.
  • Students will revise a paragraph after peer feedback and explain one change they made.

Mathematics

  • Students will solve percentage problems using real-life price and discount examples.
  • Students will compare two methods of solving an equation and justify which is more efficient.
  • Students will interpret a simple data set and communicate one evidence-based conclusion.

Science

  • Students will classify materials as conductors or insulators using evidence from an investigation.
  • Students will explain one factor affecting evaporation and connect it with an everyday example.
  • Students will work collaboratively to design a fair test and identify one limitation in the method.

Social Science

  • Students will compare two perspectives on a historical event using evidence from sources.
  • Students will interpret a population graph and explain one implication for a community.
  • Students will evaluate a policy choice from the perspectives of two stakeholder groups.

Physical Education

  • Students will demonstrate the correct sequence of a passing technique.
  • Students will apply two tactical principles during a small-sided game.
  • Students will reflect on their performance and identify one specific improvement target.

Art and Design

  • Students will apply contrast intentionally in an original composition.
  • Students will explain one design choice using subject-specific vocabulary.
  • Students will respond to peer feedback by refining one aspect of their work.

A quick test for a strong learning outcome

  1. Is it clearly different from the teacher’s activity?
  2. Does it describe something the student will demonstrate?
  3. Is the action observable or assessable?
  4. Does it match the intended cognitive level?
  5. Does it include relevant skills as well as knowledge?
  6. Can it connect to real-life application where appropriate?
  7. Can the teacher identify evidence for it during the lesson?
  8. Is the wording simple enough for students to understand?
  9. Can it realistically be achieved and evidenced in the available time?

Reflection must follow the outcome

A learning outcome should not disappear once the lesson ends. Reflection should always follow the teaching act.

After the lesson, the teacher should ask:

  • Which outcomes were fully achieved?
  • Which were partially achieved?
  • Which were not yet achieved?
  • What evidence supports that judgement?
  • Which students need support or extension?
  • What should change in the next lesson?

The cycle becomes:

Plan the outcome → Teach → Gather evidence → Reflect → Adjust the next learning step.

Reflection should follow every teaching act, because planned learning and actual learning are not always the same.

Learning outcomes in the wider lesson-planning process

Learning outcomes work best when they are integrated with the complete lesson plan. They should influence activities, questioning, differentiation, assessment, grouping, resources and reflection rather than appearing as a sentence at the top of the document.

What is the difference between a learning objective and a learning outcome?

How many learning outcomes should one lesson have?

Only as many as can realistically be taught, observed and evidenced within the available time. Specific and assessable outcomes are more useful than a long list.

Can CBSE teachers use prescribed learning outcomes directly?

CBSE and NCERT provide learning-outcome and competency frameworks that teachers can use as important reference points. Teachers should still translate them into the context of the lesson and decide what student evidence will show that the outcome has been achieved.

Final thought

A learning outcome should not be written because a template has a box labelled “outcomes.” It should help the teacher answer a much more important question:

What evidence will convince me that learning has actually happened?

When outcomes are clear, differentiated, skill-linked, connected to application and followed by reflection, they become a bridge between planning and real student learning.
