Learning Objectives: Examples for Teachers Across Subjects and Grade Levels

A strong learning objective tells a teacher and a student what successful learning should look like by the end of a lesson. A weak objective usually describes the topic to be covered rather than the learning to be demonstrated.

This difference matters. When objectives are vague, activities become disconnected and assessment becomes an afterthought. When objectives are clear and observable, teachers can align instruction, student activity and evidence of learning much more effectively.

University teaching centres and professional training guidance consistently recommend writing objectives around observable, measurable learner performance rather than vague verbs such as “know” or “understand.” Bloom’s revised taxonomy remains a useful planning tool because it helps teachers distinguish levels of cognitive demand—from remembering and understanding through applying, analysing, evaluating and creating.

What is a learning objective?

A learning objective is a concise statement describing what students should be able to demonstrate after instruction.

A useful structure is:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to + action verb + specific knowledge/skill + optional condition or criterion.

For example:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to compare two characters using at least two pieces of textual evidence.

This is stronger than:

Students will understand the characters.

How learning objectives fit Inquiry → Action → Reflection

Within the lesson-planning structure used across this series:

  • Inquiry: the objective clarifies the intended learning and helps establish the purpose of the lesson;
  • Action: learning activities and assessment should require students to demonstrate that intended learning;
  • Reflection: the evidence collected should inform what needs reteaching, extension or adjustment next.

If the objective says “analyse”, but the assessment only asks students to recall facts, the lesson is not aligned.

Common verbs to avoid unless you make them observable

Words such as these are often too vague on their own:

Instead ask: What would a student do differently if they truly understood this?

An objective tells us the intended destination. Success criteria help students recognise whether they have reached it.

Objective:

Success criteria:

  • I explain how the evidence supports my point.

Success criteria make expectations transparent and support feedback, self-assessment and peer discussion.

How many learning objectives should one lesson have?

More is not automatically better. A common planning error is to list many objectives that cannot realistically be taught and assessed within one period.

A useful principle is: write only as many objectives as you can genuinely teach, observe and respond to.

One strong objective may be enough for a focused lesson. A longer sequence may require several connected outcomes.

How to check whether a learning objective is strong

Use these six questions:

  1. Does it describe student learning rather than teacher activity?
  2. Is the key action observable?
  3. Can I collect evidence within the available time?
  4. Does the cognitive demand match the age and prior learning of students?
  5. Do the planned activities actually practise the stated objective?
  6. Does the assessment ask students to demonstrate the same kind of learning?

Common mistakes

  • Writing “Teacher will explain…” as the objective.
  • Using “understand” without defining evidence.
  • Choosing a higher-order verb only because it sounds impressive.
  • Writing an objective that is too broad for one lesson.
  • Designing an activity first and inventing an objective afterward.
  • Assessing recall when the objective requires analysis or application.
  • Sharing objectives with students but never returning to them during the lesson.

What is the difference between a learning objective and a learning outcome?

A learning objective states the intended direction of learning: what the teacher wants students to learn or focus on. A learning outcome states what students should be able to demonstrate as evidence that the learning has actually occurred. The distinction is useful because it separates intention from evidence. Must every lesson use Bloom’s taxonomy?

No. Bloom’s taxonomy is a useful planning language, not a compulsory recipe. Teachers should select cognitive demand based on the curriculum, students’ prior knowledge and the purpose of the lesson.

Should every objective be higher order?

No. Recall and understanding are often necessary foundations. The problem is not lower-order thinking; the problem is never moving beyond it when the curriculum requires application, analysis, judgement or creation.

Can learning objectives include attitudes or values?

Yes, although affective and behavioural outcomes may require different evidence from cognitive objectives. Values should not be reduced to slogans; teachers need observable situations in which students can practise and reflect on them.
